Adoption of converged technologies seeing growth

05 May 2006

Implementation of voice over internet protocol (VoIP), video and unified communications services has soared, demonstrating steep growth in the adoption of converged technologies, a new survey shows.

CMP Media has released the results of an annual survey showing that a significant percentage of IT professionals have implemented converged technologies alongside their wireless networks

The San Francisco-based marketing solutions company found that 79 per cent of companies quizzed were using video for conferencing purposes or meetings, while 58 per cent are using or plan to use unified communications.

The study forecasts the top areas of interest for the Interop Las Vegas 2006 trade show, with wireless technologies in first place at 65 per cent, followed by security (63 per cent) and management (55 per cent).

Almost half the respondents to the poll (47 per cent) claimed to have integrated or be planning to integrate VoIP services with an 802.11 wireless network, whilst 67 per cent had opted for VoIP-only implementation.

Interop general manager, Lenny Heymann, said: "The converged network has significantly improved access to people and information, and this study confirms that Interop attendees are leading the charge in implementing the next generation of IP communications to help them achieve business success."

CMP Media recently announced the results of the Best of Interop Awards during Interop Las Vegas 2006, with award winners divided into seven different technology categories.
