Flexibility drives VoIP projects

26/06/2006 11:24:50

Improved flexibility is fuelling take-up of VoIP technologies amongst US Fortune 1000 and mid-market companies, according to research from TheInfoPro (TIP).

The research found that many companies are planning to implement VoIP technologies such as IP Private Branch Exchange (PBX) and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) products.

Around 22 per cent of respondents are already using SIP products while another 27 per cent are piloting or have plans to implement such tools within the year. Furthermore, 52 per cent of the companies interviewed fully utilise PBX already.

SIP and PBX solutions have captured the number one and number four positions respectively in the Voice Network Infrastructure Heat Index (TM), which measures the planned near-term implementations of each technology.

Meanwhile, only 23 per cent of organisations said they did not have a current policy, implementation or initiative regarding VoIP.

And of those respondents who do not currently have VoIP technology in use or a policy initiative in place, 52 per cent consider it extremely likely that they will within the next 12 months.

Explaining the benefits of VoIP, one TIP member said: "We are finding more and more opportunities inside our business where a change is needed, and VoIP is the more cost effective choice."

Over 850 IT decision makers are members of the TIPNetwork, including Citigroup, FedEx, McGraw-Hill, MasterCard, Pfizer, Vodafone, PepsiCo, JPMorgan Chase, and Harvard University.
