Storage taking up more of big firms' budgets

19/10/2006 15:40:12

Storage concerns take up more than 15 per cent of the budgets of the elite Fortune 1000 businesses in the US, according to a report by TheInfoPro.

Additionally, the average installed storage capacity possessed by Fortune 1000 organisations has increased this year from 198 terabytes to a highly impressive 680 terabytes.

Robert Stevenson, managing director of TheInfoPro’s Storage Sector, said: "For the last four waves of research, installed storage capacity in the Fortune 1000 has doubled every ten months.

"It is an astonishing rate, with staffing and backup administration struggling to keep up."

The budget percentages allocated to storage have increased in the case of nearly 50 per cent of these firms, with consolidation and virtualisation strategies topping their lists of cost-saving initiatives.

Mr Stevenson added: "Capacity alone is not a problem. It's the management of the capacity that is most challenging.

"New archiving, data classification, deduplication, and WAFS solutions are getting higher positions in TheInfoPro's Storage Networking Technology Heat Index as organizations look to innovate in order to manage growth effectively."
