Plasmon highlights cost savings in UDO disk technology

02 May 2007

Research from Plasmon suggests that firms could save about £750,000 by using ultra density optical (UDO) technology as opposed to magnetic disk equipment.

The results showed that a ten-year strategy for archiving would cost a business £750,000 in terms of power. This compares to a similarly configured strategy using UDO technology, which would cost £20,000.

Plasmon additionally found that UDO technology releases only five tonnes of carbon emissions each year, in comparison with the 207 tonnes from magnetic disk strategies.

Steve Tongish, marketing director EMEA at Plasmon, commented: "When evaluating the best strategy for archiving data, all available data storage technologies should be carefully evaluated.

"Optical media does not require constant spinning and therefore uses much less energy than a magnetic disk-based archive."

The news follows Plasmon's announcement that it has launched a new second generation UDO storage solution.

This is to provide double the capacity of previous systems, while increasing performance by 50 per cent in comparison with first-generation UDO systems.
