Oracle buys Sleepycat Software
15 Feb 2006
Oracle has strengthened its position in the embedded database market with the purchase of open-source database vendor Sleepycat Software.
This latest addition to Oracle's embedded database product portfolio line will improve customer access to a fast low-cost open-source database.
Sleepycat's Berkeley DB is part of several well-known open-source products, including the Linux and BSD Unix operating systems, Apache Web server, OpenLDAP directory and OpenOffice productivity suite.
Oracle says this latest addition to its embedded database product portfolio, which already features Oracle Lite for mobile devices and TimesTen for high-performance in-memory database applications, will enable it to provide "enterprise-class support" to its customers.
Sleepycat CEO Mike Olsen said that Oracle's resources will enable his company to better serve customers and the open source community.
Many software vendors acquire open-source companies to attract additional developers with the aim of convincing them to upgrade to paid-for products for use across a wide range of applications.
