Apple seeks to avoid worm infestation
17 Feb 2006
One of the first malicious programs designed specifically to target Apple computers is threatening to make its presence felt via the company's iChat instant messaging program.
The Leap-A worm disguises itself in the apparent form of the new version of Apple's Leopard operating system, enticing the user to install it and set it free to plunder their buddy lists.
Major security firms have played down the risk, though, saying that there are few discernible holes in their protection which the worm could possibly exploit and that it poses minimal threat provided that people are scrupulous in rejecting file transfers.
Apple told the Wall Street Journal that the program should be termed "malicious software" rather than regarded as a "virus", due to the way in which it attempts to spread.
Most viruses are designed to attack Microsoft Windows, which is why Leap-A tailored specially for Macs is attracting such attention and surprise.
