Companies wising up to security priorities

03 May 2006

A new survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers has yielded the conclusion that three-quarters of businesses in the UK rates security to be a high priority for their board of directors or senior management.

It also revealed that companies are starting to spend more on security measures – typically a firm will now spend between four and five per cent of its IT budget on such controls, which is a notable improvement on the three per cent recorded in 2004 and the two per cent of 2002.

Encouragingly, it found that the number of companies possessing a security policy has increased threefold since 2000 – and it further discerned that 98 per cent of businesses have now adopted anti-virus software controls.

The denouement seems to be that fewer businesses are experiencing security incidents than when the survey was last carried out in 2004 – with the current 62 per cent figure looking far more impressive than the previous 74 per cent.

Large businesses account for most of this good news – with small businesses having the most work to do in this department. The survey revealed that the typical small business suffers eight security incidents a year, which is a 50 per cent increase, while larger organisations have seen such cases lessen by a similar percentage.
