Huawei lands big Opal deal

05 May 2006

Huawei has signed a new deal with Opal Telecom, a UK subsidiary of the Carphone Warehouse Group.

Opal plans to install its own broadband access equipment in as many as 1,000 BT local exchanges across Britain through local loop unbundling (LLU).

The agreement between the two companies will see Huawei supply Opal with its Quidway 6506R Ethernet switch for aggregation, which will feed back traffic into Opal's national optical network, Light Reading reports.

The Chinese company is also providing its Honet UA5000 multiservice access platform (MSAP) to support high-speed broadband access services in a deal thought to be worth millions.

Opal recently unveiled a new 'free broadband for life' offer that has proved popular with UK consumers and is now aiming to develop its own broadband capabilities.

Huawei is the largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment in China, making a range of products including core voice and data switching platforms, optical networking systems and wireless products.
