Newisys server launch wins praise
21 Jun 2006
Newisys' launch of its Opteron server has been praised by industry experts for the quality of the hardware and the method behind its marketing.
Writing in InfoWorld, Tom Yager, chief technologist at the eponymous test centre, praised the firm for the design of its Opteron system as well as the manner in which it launched.
Citing the launch event back in April 22nd, Mr Yager hailed the firm for a launching "serious enterprise contender right out of the gate with a server design that matches or outguns the best dual-processor systems from major manufacturers".
The US-based firm used a 64-bit processor and chipset to devise a server targeted at corporations, with a price limit of $3,000.
By setting strict limits and working to a clear budget, the firm was able to harness what Mr Yager describes as the "stellar talent" in its IBM engineers, constantly going over potential flaws and ironing out any problems.
In addition the sales of the systems to server manufacturers, rather than customers, means branding can be done by different firms, with a bespoke service ultimately allowing firms to sell on the technology.
In its mission statement on its website Newisys, founded by Phil Hester and Clay Cipione in 2000, said they aim to "deliver real customer value to the enterprise server market through leadership designs focused on price/performance, scalability, quality and manageability".
