Demand for Ethernet switches soars
21 Jun 2006
The new 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches are expected to be in strong demand during the next four years, according to a new report from In-Stat.
The market analysts say that the Ethernet switch type will benefit from wider growth in the market, as average selling prices continue to drop, after falling in cost by up to a fifth in 2005.
In total the Ethernet switch market is expected to swell from $14.9 billion in 2005 to $17.7 billion in 2009.
"With growing demand for streaming video, voice over IP, high-end multimedia, medical imaging, and other bandwidth-intensive applications, Ethernet continues to evolve to remain the standard networking technology," commented In-Stat analyst Pamela Tufegdzic.
As the switches become cheaper, In-Stat expects new, more powerful devices will come on the market to meet the demands of the future.
