Demand outstrips SMBs' storage budgets, says Gartner
24 Oct 2006
SMBs' storage budgets are not currently matching up to the level of demand for storage capacity, the results of a Gartner survey suggest.
Of 1,100 IT managers questioned, 55 per cent accepted that keeping up with the level of demand was their biggest storage-related challenge – saying that the next year would see capacity requirements increase by an average of 25 per cent, with a 41 per cent rise the year after.
But, despite their acknowledgement of this, only a third of them said that they would be extending their spending on storage technology during 2007.
Gartner analyst Pushan Rinnen summed up the findings by saying: "Sometimes the budget has nothing to do with your need."
She added that better management of storage networks can control growth without the express need to add capacity – citing ILM strategies such as tiered storage, which sees critical information accessible using fibre channel technology, as a viable way forward.
"Many SMBs have failed to understand that implementing ILM and tiered storage can help solve their problems with growing capacity," she suggested..
