US firms hot on carbon footprints

25 Oct 2006

About three-quarters of US companies are actively engaged in measuring their carbon footprints, a Conference Board survey of 92 firms from across a range of industries has revealed.

The survey was primarily concerned with assessing how the controlling of greenhouse gas emissions is being tied into companies' overall business strategies – and 95 per cent of those questioned admitted that a future concerned with carbon conservation presents both risks and opportunities.

Half of the firms surveyed confirmed that they have in place a programme to actively offset or reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, while a further 33 per cent are developing such systems. Only 15 per cent had no plans to do so at this stage. The vast majority of existing programmes involved reductions in energy use.

Of the uncertainties involved for customers looking to switch to a more carbon conscious future the report said: "For some companies, such risks are balanced by perceived reputation benefits that they hope to accrue by being innovators and leaders in addressing an issue that is becoming of increasing concern globally."

Encouragingly, the issue has reached the board level agendas of over two-thirds of those questioned for the report.
