Two new virtual storage products for Fujitsu Siemens

28 Nov 2006

Fujitsu Siemens has introduced two new models of its CentricStore virtual tape appliance, aimed at attracting mid-sized users to the possibility of this kind of storage.

The CentricStor VTA 500 and 1500 appliances are involved with managing the process of disk-to-disk-to-tape backup, and have a mere 2.7 terabytes of caching disk apiece. They can each connect to one tape library and a maximum of four physical tape drives.

Channel Register quotes Marcus Schneider, the firm's product marketing director, as saying: "This is not low end. This is for mid-market companies, with data centres and perhaps 1,000 employees, not for people with one tape drive."

"People don't have to deal with physical tape any more - that saves a huge amount of money."

The appliances are particularly good for backup consolidation because they virtualise physical tape drives.
