

Over 1,000 billion VoIP minutes used in 2006

New research reveals that 1,079 billion minutes of VoIP traffic was carried by service providers around the world last year.
The 8th annual study of the VoIP market by ILocus shows over half of calls were for long-distance national calls.
A total of 37.5 million Voice over Broadband (VoBB) subscribers were recorded - an increase of 16.5 million subscribers over the year - with biggest growth in the US, France and Germany. Expansion is also expected in the coming year for the Netherlands, Canada and Italy.
In the VoIP equipment market, softswitch and media gateways sales generated combined revenues of $2.2 billion - with 36.9 million Class 5 softswitch licences, 34.8 million Class 4 softswitch licences and 48.2 million service provider media gateway ports sold worldwide.
Huawei was named as the leader of the Class 4 softswitch market.
The research also showed that desktop IP phone sales increased by 38 per cent and the internet protocol private branch exchange (IPPBX) market grew by 52 per cent..
