Polycom HD solution brings benefit to hospital
26 Apr 2007
A hospital in the US state of New Jersey is benefiting from a high-definition (HD) video solution from Polycom.
St Joseph's Children's hospital is using an HD video-conferencing system to consult with doctors at St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee on paediatric cases.
The Polycom technology, developed in California, sends HD images from a range of sources including pathology slides and imaging studies.
Michael LaMacchia, chairman of paediatrics at St. Joseph's, said: "The level of detail is so accurate now that it lends itself to really making a pinpoint diagnosis."
"It increases the breadth and depth of expertise," he added.
The technology uses a non-commercial internet system known as Internet2.
Reserved for research-related purposes only, this system is able to transmit three-dimensional images much more quickly.
St Joseph's is now hoping to use the new relationship with St Jude to enrol more New Jersey children with cancer into clinical trials.
It currently works with the group, Medical Missions for Children.
