Data centres are running out of space, says research
04 May 2007
Data centres are running out of space and need to prioritise space for storage, according to a new study.
A survey from the Aperture Research Institute found that 43 per cent of data centres are running low on physical space and power, while 90 per cent of those surveyed said that three-quarters or more of their space is allocated to IT equipment.
The research also found that servers are now using more power than before, with the average rack requiring between seven and 18 kilowatts of power.
Steve Yellen, vice president of marketing at Aperture, told publictechnology.net: "Data centres are facing a time of crisis because of the increased demands on their physical resources and management.
"There's a gap between IT and data centre facilities that's resulting in a rapid increase in high-density equipment without thinking about the ability of a data centre to reliably support that capacity.
He added that with the "data centres stretching thinner and thinner" there are likely to be increasing instances of downtime and failure.
The news follows a survey from BroadGroup, which found data centre profits are likely to double in the next five years.
