Intransa's 10Gb PCU100 offers "excellent scalability"
10 May 2007
Intransa's new Storstac 10Gb iSCSI system will live up to the hopes of those who are eagerly anticipating its arrival, according to multiple industry reports.
Due for release later this month, early indications are that the StorStac PCU100's performance will offer "excellent scalability" by allowing users to upgrade to higher speed systems easily and simply.
The system is specifically optimised for content-rich server and network-based applications, for example video-on-demand and video surveillance.
Arun Taneja, founder and analyst of the Taneja Group, welcomed the new system and said that the PCU100 will allow businesses to "network, consolidate and have access to rich media faster and in more locations than ever before."
Infoworld.com has also reported that the system is capable of performing at sustained throughputs of 700Mbps (5.65Gbps) and at ranges between 830Mbps and 900Mbps, with two controllers.
Additional early reports have also suggested that the StorStac PCU100 will be able to offer "serious speed at accessible pricing," with extremely useful functionality. The PCU100 also features unique architecture and connects each drive through TCP/IP, as opposed to relying on an internal bus.
Management interfaces are described as "great," while the system boasts "excellent redundancy with multiple controllers and drive shelves."
Douglass F Gibbs, pathology bioinformatics manager at the University of Michigan, USA, has worked with Intransa over the past six months and said that the StorStac IP SAN’s architecture and design offers advantages for flexibility and scalability.
Dr Gibbs also said that separating each drive sets the system above iSCSI NAS devices, with failover volumes proving to be a big plus.
With the PCU100, if one controller fails, the others continue to make storage available to the same hosts. In test situations the IOmeter job has continued to run without error or interruption.
Bud Broomhead, chief executive officer of Intransa, commented: "Extending the benefits of a high performance, high throughput IP storage system to customers with capacity-heavy applications has always been a priority for Intransa.
"And now, with the Intransa StorStac System customers with capacity-heavy applications have a choice,” he said.
Broomhead also added that having completed "an extensive customer beta test program” of the 10 GbE StorStac System, Intransa is now confident that it is "delivering the highest performing and most scalable IP network storage on the market, completely road-tested in real-world conditions to meet customer requirements.”
David Galton-Fenzi, group sales director at Zycko, also welcomed the announcement of the new high-performance StorStac System.
"Intransa's scalable architecture has always been unique in the IP SAN marketplace,” he said. "We expect that the higher performing StorStac System 2 and 10 GbE offerings are going to open up new markets for the two of us as partners, such as video surveillance, video on demand, and IPTV."
"This is a good match for Zycko and our customers and shows Zycko's continuing dedication to offering true best-of-breed technologies," he added.
The news follows reports of growth and restructuring at Intransa, with Robert Maily now taking up the position of vice president of finance and administration at Intransa. Lee Zipin has also been appointed as vice president of engineering.
