High-density content 'creating demand for data centres'
15 May 2007
A growth in the number of people using high-density content has led to increased bandwidth and therefore more data centre space requests, reports suggest.
Digital Realty Trust is just one company that has felt the necessity for more data space, having purchased centres at a rate of about one per month in the first quarter,
Leesburg Today states that that there has been a resurgence in demand for data storage space as changes in business and consumer behaviour take hold.
Mike Foust, chief executive officer for the company, said: "Searching on Google or running transactions on eBay or Amazon or downloading content form Microsoft, we all utilise growing amounts of bandwidth and data over the internet."
He added that business requirements and US government attitudes towards disaster recovery have also increased demand.
It was recently reported that Australian companies are using several data centres instead of just one for centralised backup.
Computerworld recently reported that using more than one data centre would lead to a more comprehensive disaster recovery plan as well as increase uptime.
