European data centers use 50 times more energy than an office block

18 Jun 2007

Data centres on average are using around 50 times more energy than an office block, according to IT Consultancy BroadGroup.

The company said that inefficiencies, server proliferation and rising data centre density, are pushing data centres to the point at which power and cooling costs will overtake hardware expenditures.

It says that this is coming at the same time as data centre managers are under pressure to reduce energy costs due to the threat of future legislation to make data centres greener and ecologically friendly, reduce carbon emissions, and develop sustainable IT policies.

Philip Low, managing director of BroadGroup, said a new report by the company provides a framework for greening data centres, and proposes recommendations for some of the key steps in the greening process.

"It brings together a global purview of the evolution of green data centres, the initiatives underway, identifies the many issues involved in the current debate and offers a methodical review and recommendations, of steps for data centre managers to take in their quest to be green," the company said in a statement.

The guide is aimed at data centre managers in Europe.

BroadGroup analysts, US organisations and businesses are leading much of the initiative in creating green standards, but it is now being developed into public policy in Europe.
