18 Jun 2007
Huawei Technologies has announced plans for $5.2m worth of investment in the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) in Lahore, Pakistan, in order to strengthen technology research in the country.
The company will provide state of the art wireless, mobile and telecommunication equipment to UET within two months for research and training of graduates, the governor of Punjab Lt Gen Khalid Maqbool is reported to have said by the Associated Press.
"We will fully encourage Chinese close co-operation in other areas especially establishment research centres in other campus of the UET and private sector in Pakistan," he said.
He said the investment will mean UET will offer the largest training facility in telecom technology in the region. The centre will train UET students as well as trainees for Huawei and other universities.
Chief executive of Huawei Technologies, Yi Xiang, said half of its total employees are fully engaged in research and development.
The deal follows an earlier agreement for Huawei to supply GSM (global system for mobile communication) equipment worth $3m to UET.
