SMEs 'struggle with day-to-day IT challenges'
03 Sep 2007
Small and medium-sized businesses are struggling with day-to-day IT issues, it has been claimed.
Research from IT support firm Connect reveals that standard IT hassles topped the headache list for IT managers, being cited as the biggest challenge for 37 per cent of those surveyed, followed by security with 32 per cent of the vote.
Other major issues uncovered by the study included a lack of understanding by staff using IT products and problems with costs.
Mark MacGregor, chief executive of the firm, commented that high-profile issues including Web 2.0, mobile working and open source software currently monopolise much of the news coverage in the IT industry.
"While we're certainly not dismissing those concepts, the reality is that for the entrepreneurs and owner-managers that drive much of the innovation and growth in our economy, the issues are really much simpler," he said
"They just want robust, cost-effective IT systems that actually work."
In July 2007, ZDNet UK advised IT manager to avoid getting bogged down in day-to-day operations and not lose sight of other important aspects of management, including spending time and money developing staff and encouraging teamwork.
