Firms 'need to address VoIP security threats'
04 Sep 2007
While enterprises are dealing with external security threats to their business by using virus detection software, firewalls and spam blocking solutions, many are yet to properly address the potential security implications of VoIP and WiFi networks, it has been claimed.
Research from National Computing Centre (NCC) reveals that 85 per cent of firms have not implemented VoIP security methods, while 40 per cent of businesses surveyed have only partially secured their wireless networks,
Stefan Foster, managing director of NCC, said: "Fraudsters are increasingly targeting IT systems and the growing use of WiFi is attracting their attention both inside and outside of the office environment."
He compared the running of an unsecured network to a homeowner locking a front door but neglecting to close a window.
In October 2005, the VoIP Security Alliance published its VoIP security framework, which was billed as the industry's first comprehensive guide to the security issues and threats involved when using the technology.
