Energy and floor space limits to drive rapid changes, says Gartner
04 Oct 2007
Rapid changes lie ahead for the data centre industry, according to a new industry analysis from Gartner.
The market research firm claims that the issues most likely to necessitate improvements to information technology (IT) infrastructure among businesses in the coming years are energy usage and floor space.
Commenting on the industry in the US, the firm asserts that the majority of data centres were constructed more than seven years ago - and were designed for a maximum power usage of 150 watts per square foot.
But with many data centres predicted to require four times that level of energy by 2011, up to 70 per cent of data centres may need an overhaul in the interim.
Rakesh Kumar, research vice-president at Gartner, comments: "Failure to respond quickly and appropriately to the changing market conditions and technologies will result in needlessly high energy bills."
In the report US Data Centres: The Calm Before the Storm, Mr Kumar observes that environmental awareness and the implementation of new technologies are also likely to be driving forces for infrastructure costs in the coming years..
