Virtualisation 'offers 40% performance boost'
05 Oct 2007
Server virtualisation can result in an improvement of up to 40 per cent in storage area network (San) performance, it has been asserted.
That was the conclusion of the Storage Virtualisation (Sans) session at the Storage Decisions conference, reports Amy Newman, managing editor of ServerWatch.
"Virtualisation and storage are highly complementary," she writes, while observing the security issues presented by implementing such a solution.
Ms Newman adds that the benefits come "perhaps because many of the components of a traditional storage platform - such as Raid - have an architecture similar to that of a virtual environment".
And she notes the need for suitable authentication procedures in light of a move towards greater virtualisation.
Scott McIntyre, vice-president of software and customer marketing at Emulex, told her that physical security "doesn't cut it any more", Ms Newman states.
Emulex recently revealed that it is to provide server-to-fabric authentication with its 4 Gbps and planned 8 Gbps host bus adapters..
