Riverbed adds data transfer unit to Steelhead range

24 Oct 2007

Wide-area data services provider Riverbed has announced a new addition to its Steelhead range.

The new model 6120 is designed to facilitate transfers between data centres, the company advises, as well as allowing businesses to support mobile workers and distributed branch offices.

Storage volumes on offer in previous Steelhead models has been doubled to provide a three-terabyte data store and a "raw capacity" of seven terabytes overall, according to figures from Riverbed.

Meanwhile, version 4.1 of the Riverbed Optimisation System (RiOS) has also been unveiled with "disaster recovery intelligence" and the ability to directly encrypt data stored on Steelhead appliances.

Senior vice-president of marketing and business development Eric Wolford comments: "With the combination of the new disaster recovery functionality in RiOS 4.1 and the processing and storage capacity of the Steelhead appliance model 6120, we are able to deliver increased scalability."

Riverbed client Cubist Pharmaceuticals recently revealed that by implementing Steelhead solutions, its backup process has been accelerated to 55 times its previous speed.
