Data centres 'will be judged on agility'
25 Oct 2007
A primary factor in assessing the quality of data centres in the coming years is to be agility, according to Gartner.
The industry analyst asserts that the ability of a data centre to incorporate new features and systems quickly and with minimal cost is to be the "primary measure of data centre excellence".
By balancing virtualised and unvirtualised processes and reusing virtual servers for more than one project, businesses could stand to make greater use of the technology currently available, the organisation predicts.
Vice-president Tom Bittman comments: "An agile data centre will handle exceptions effectively, but learn from exceptions to improve standards and processes - agility will become a major business differentiator in a connected world."
In the months leading up to 2009, Gartner anticipates that 11 per cent of the addressable market will adopt virtualisation, with about four million such servers in operation by that time.
Previous figures from the firm stated that data centres currently account for nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of global carbon dioxide emissions from the IT industry, while the sector as a whole produces similar emissions to those from aviation.
