Backup costs 'should decline with age of data'

05 Nov 2007

Older data should be stored more cheaply as it is typically of lesser value to the company than recent files, it has been claimed.

Industry publication Processor reports that many firms treat new information on their storage network the same as archived data instead of utilising backup lifecycle management (BLM).

According to the publication, BLM is a term trademarked by Asigra and applies to the process by which critical files can be identified and kept separate from the archive, while less essential information is backed up via the network.

Executive vice president of Asigra Eran Farajun tells Processor: "Because the value of data declines quickly over time, the cost of service should decline based on the age of data."

Asigra asserts that BLM can help to meet with compliance regulations as well as reducing the access time required to recover critical data from the storage network, while observing that archived information should be "managed throughout its lifecycle to provide the best data protection"..
