LignUp to provide 'oral histories'

06 Nov 2007

Members of genealogy website Ancestry.com are to be given the option of adding their voices to their family histories thanks to VoIP technology provider LignUp, it has emerged.

The company reveals that it has entered into an agreement to supply the operator of the website with VoIP-based voice recording software derived from the LignUp Communications Application Server.

Using the technology, members can now record narratives or, by initiating a call via the Ancestry.com website, record interviews with family members to be held alongside their family tree on the site.

Kevin Nethercott, president and chief operating officer of LignUp, comments: "Text is useful for sharing data, but with actual voice you are given much greater context, whether it's the thrill of newlyweds or the joy of a new child."

More than 3.8 million family trees have now been created by Ancestry.com members, according to the website, while LignUp recently observed the potential for VoIP technology to allow a user's voice to be recorded directly into a variety of applications..
