'Most UK firms use VoIP'
21 Jan 2008
The majority of UK-based businesses are now using voice over internet protocol (VoIP) communications on their telephone networks, it has emerged.
Figures compiled by analyst Data Integration reveal that almost three in five companies use VoIP for speech communication - although uptake of video conferencing over IP is less widespread.
In all, 58.8 per cent use VoIP telephony and 32.1 per cent use video, with an overall satisfaction level of 88.2 per cent and 85 per cent happy with their video IP solution.
Managing director of Data Integration Garath Lauder comments: "Now is the time to be thinking about your IP readiness if you're considering making any changes to your voice system or local area network."
He adds that focusing on a long-term communications strategy can help to ensure that IT managers are not leading their employers into "a technology black hole".
Some 43.2 per cent of those surveyed said that they are not convinced that implementing IP video systems would have any clear benefits for their business.
Polycom was recently named by InfoWorld magazine as the recipient of two Technology of the Year awards for its personal and conferencing VoIP communications solutions.
