'Insatiable demand' for network capacity
22 Jan 2008
Industry demand for increased network bandwidth shows no signs of abating, according to an expert.
Scott McIntyre, vice-president of software and customer marketing at Emulex, tells SearchStorage of the likely importance of 8 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) networking over the coming years.
He observes an "insatiable demand" for greater network capacity, despite the introduction of 4 Gbps in 2005 - and adds that new FC host bus adapters from Emulex make use of the PCI Express 2.0 interface.
"Input-output backplanes are often underutilised on these servers," he tells the publication, "but as customers create more virtual machines they drive up utilisation."
Meanwhile, vice-president of storage systems research at IDC Richard Villars adds that 8 Gbps FC is "critical" for supplying the required network capacity to many data centres.
SearchStorage columnist Stephen Bigelow recently noted that FC networks can be made to accommodate iSCSI drives without the need to overhaul the entire infrastructure..
