Spectra Logic awarded Argonne contract

22 Jan 2008

Argonne National Laboratory is to implement enterprise-level T950 products from Spectra Logic as part of its new Leadership Computing Facility in Chicago.

The laboratory was the nation's first and opened its doors in 1946 as a research centre for the US Department of Energy and is surrounded by a reserved area of woodland.

Brian Grainger, vice-president of Spectra Logic Federal, comments: "The Argonne National Laboratory award marks Spectra Logic's first multiple 10,000-slot contract within the Department of Energy system."

A maximum of 10,050 slots can be installed across an eight-frame Spectra T950 system, allowing for maximum storage space of up to 16.08 petabytes, or about 16.9 million gigabytes.

The first phase of the plan was undertaken earlier this month, with Spectra Logic having been chosen following a 12-month review of the options available to the laboratory.

A "large, comprehensive project" is planned to put in place complete data protection for the installation's sensitive files over the next five years..
