Gartner sees 7% server sales growth
27 Feb 2008
Global server shipments increased by seven per cent in terms of units distributed in 2007, according to figures from Gartner.
The analyst reveals accelerating demand for servers over the course of the year, culminating in growth of 11 per cent during the last three months despite a number of economic difficulties in some countries serviced by the sector.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers experienced one of the greatest rates of expansion in terms of server vendor sales, increasing its market share by 13.9 per cent compared with 2006 performance.
Typical revenue growth for all companies stood at four per cent for the 12-month period and about three per cent for the last quarter of 2007.
Jeffrey Hewitt, research vice-president at Gartner, explains that while a decline was detected in mainframe sales, this could be accounted for by a "slow period" in the replacement cycle for such units.
Gartner recently warned chief information officers that by 2010 the role is likely to be available only to candidates with non-IT management experience.
