Businesses 'should install VoIP patches'

27 Feb 2008

IP-based communication systems must be kept up to date in order to avoid security risks, an expert has warned.

Greg Day, security analyst at McAfee, explains that applying security patches is important at all levels of the network - ranging from VoIP base units to routers and switches.

He adds that users of the company network should also be educated as to the potential ways in which their activities could compromise security, with a focus on what may be safe at home but dangerous at work.

Mr Day suggests that such concerns are increasingly importance as greater attention is paid to issues arising from data leakages and the need for compliance with the relevant legislation.

"Have appropriate polices to manage the data and, where appropriate, technology to enforce this," he advises.

Companies should look to their own infrastructure - such as whether or not the network is open to external connections - and decide how to tackle their risk based on their own areas of greatest vulnerability, he concludes.
