ONStor NAS solution aids marine research school activities
07 Mar 2008
A science school in the University of Miami has announced that it has installed an ONStor network attached storage (NAS) solution.
The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science has indicated that it has chosen the ONStorNAS due to its similarity to Windows file servers without the problems associated with software updates.
Michael Anderson, director of computing at the school, told campustechnology.com: "By loading a standardised software image on the ONStor unit, we don't have to deal with the downtime and time consumption that updating multiple Windows machines require."
The spokesperson added that the file server was useful to the school given that its activities involved the use of many different technologies and solutions which precluded the use of standardised data centres.
ONStor's product, however, provides network-attached storage for a wide variety of systems and is not expected to become too costly to manage, as was the case with the school's earlier data storage solution.
Last month, ONStor announced that it had joined the Green Grid, an industry enterprise promoting the uptake of energy-efficient solutions in the wider IT marketplace.
