Gartner bullish on de-duplication

07 Mar 2008

The de-duplication sector is set to perform strongly in the coming months as increasing numbers of firms acknowledge the benefits of associated technologies.

Such is the opinion of David Russell, vice-president for storage technologies and strategy at Gartner Research.

Speaking to Hu Yoshida, chief technical officer of Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), Mr Russell explained that de-duplication could provide answers to questions about data backup management and disaster recovery.

Furthermore, obvious fiscal benefits could be associated with de-duplication, given its reduction in the amount of storage needed to supply reliable backup.

In his blog, Mr Yoshida added that different forms of de-duplication are useful for different sized enterprises, with pre, post and inline implementations providing benefits depending on the requirements of the user.

Earlier this month, HDS stated that it was looking to move beyond "bulletproof" disk hardware platforms to de-duplication and security services, among other tools for efficient data management.
