Smart launches 8 GB registered DIMMs for servers

10 Mar 2008

Smart Modular Technologies has announced the release of new dual-rank DDR2 registered DIMMs for use in high-performance server systems.

The firm explains that the 8 GB modules come in response to the fact that processing power typically increases at a faster rate to that achieved by memory, meaning many servers could be restricted by their current levels of installed memory.

Suresh Rajan, vice-president of marketing at MetaRAM - manufacturer of the chipset used in the new modules - says: "Processing power doubles every 18 months, while memory is now doubling only every 36 months."

Alan Gulachenski, Smart's senior director of advanced memory solutions, adds that the units are able to "satisfy customers' needs for increased memory density" in a cost-effective manner.

The launch of the new products might also be welcomed by those looking to lower the amount of power consumed by their servers.

Data from Smart Modular Technologies shows that there is a 20 per cent power saving to be achieved over quad-rank 8 GB modules or dual-rank 4 GB DIMM modules.
