Data consolidation can save millions, says Gartner
14 Mar 2008
Optimising a data storage environment can come with a seven-figure saving in operational costs, according to research from Gartner.
The analyst claims that many businesses are unaware of the most efficient changes to put in place - leaving them at risk of spending more than they save.
But by making intelligent and informed choices, the amount spent on maintaining redundant databases could be reduced from a current level in the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars.
"Consolidation activities can potentially reduce these costs by ten per cent to 25 per cent - or more in some cases," Gartner asserts.
Database consolidation is listed as one of the nine key areas in which chief information officers (CIOs) may be able to lower their overall expenditure over the coming year.
Previous findings from the firm revealed that obsolescence is a major obstacle to many CIOs, with a large proportion of data managers likely to need to replace areas of their company's infrastructure by 2010.
