Application delivery key, says Gartner

Efficient delivery of applications is an increasingly important role of IT departments, according to Gartner.
The analyst predicts that IT professionals are likely to find they are more responsible for ensuring application delivery networks function effectively over the coming years.
Research vice-president Joe Skorupa comments that the creation of the role of application delivery professional could meet with resistance among the "old guard" of data professionals.
But he adds: "IT departments that add these positions will see smoother application development and deployment, increased user satisfaction and lower costs."
The creation of such a position within businesses is likely to be spurred by the increasing uptake of application delivery networks, Gartner concludes.
Among the solutions for firms looking to enhance their application delivery, Riverbed Technology's Steelhead appliances could be of interest.
In testing by industry publication Network World, these were found to reduce bandwidth requirements by more than 30 per cent and deliver traffic seven times faster than the same network with no additional in-line appliances.
