SNIA identifies 'shades of green' in data centres
02 Apr 2008
The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) has advised network managers to be aware of the "shades of green" facing the sector.
Chair of SNIA Europe Juergen Arnold explains that the issue can be simplified too much if it is allowed to be turned from a debate into a united campaign, as practitioners may stop questioning the different factors affecting the eco-friendliness of data centres.
He asserts that green IT does not end at a consideration of the energy used by powering and cooling the data centre, but should also incorporate a consideration of procurement and disposal of devices.
Meanwhile, he adds that "being green is seen as having a positive effect on a company's brand", causing many vice-presidents and chief executive officers to prioritise the greening of their data centres.
Green technologies were shortlisted by the SNIA for inclusion in the topics to be presented on at its 2008 Storage Developer Conference, due to be held later this year in Santa Clara, California..
