Huawei 'eyes expansion'

07 Apr 2008

Telecommunications equipment manufacturer Huawei is looking to expand by almost two-fifths over the coming year, it has been revealed.

In an interview with news agency Reuters, Huawei head of marketing Charlie Chen explains that the company is looking to raise its annual sales from $16 billion (£8 billion) to $22 billion - an increase of 38 per cent.

He dismisses claims that an economic slowdown in the US could cause an obstacle to this growth - although he tells the newswire that some effects are likely to be seen.

"I definitely think there are some uncertainties in front of everybody," Mr Chen says to Reuters, adding: "We still foresee more demand for services."

Meanwhile, Reuters notes that Huawei's work in Europe and the US saw the proportion of sales achieved outside of its native China escalate from 65 per cent to 72 per cent in 2007.

Huawei previously revealed it is to install the world's highest mobile transmitter on Mount Everest to service the Olympic torch relay team as it carries the torch over the summit on its way to Beijing for the 2008 games.
