Virtualisation to have biggest impact by 2012, says Gartner
07 Apr 2008
The single greatest impact to the IT industry by 2012 is likely to come through the uptake of virtualisation technologies, according to Gartner.
A spokesperson for the analyst observes that storage and networking are leading the progression of such technology with practitioners in those sectors already having adopted virtualisation.
"Virtualisation is hardly a new concept - storage has already been virtualised ... and networking is also virtualised," comments vice-president and "distinguished analyst" Philip Dawson.
Gartner adds that the likely impact of virtualisation is to extend to all areas of the market, ranging from how products are bought and deployed to how IT is managed and the ways in which companies are charged.
Thomas Bittman, vice-president of Gartner - and another "distinguished analyst" at the firm - recommends experimentation from businesses in order to determine the most effective virtualised infrastructure for their needs.
Recent advice from the organisation encouraged firms to invest in high-definition video conferencing rather than standard quality products as the cost benefits of such technology are now within reach for many companies..
