Scalability 'important in virtualisation'
07 Apr 2008
It is important to take scalability into account when adopting a virtualised network infrastructure, it has been claimed.
Writing for IT storage publication Blocks & Files, Steve Hall, branded product marketing manager at memory manufacturer Kingston Technology, advises that project managers "need to ensure" that scalability is a word used when discussing potential virtualisation upgrades.
"Organisations still need to cater for future growth and change ... it is inconvenient enough to have to take a production server offline to upgrade," he notes, adding that this inconvenience is magnified by doing so with a number of servers.
Mr Hall adds that, in about half of cases seen by the company, limitations detected within the virtualisation capabilities of the network have been caused by a lack of available memory.
His comments follow recent research conducted by ONStor which found that the most widely held expectation among IT managers is that their network-attached storage solutions should be scalable..
