Power saving 'key for future vendors'

16 Apr 2008

Data storage vendors of the future are likely to find issues relating to saving power driving their development procedures, it has been claimed.

Jayson Nolan of asset management firm RW Baird recently spoke on the "temperature" of the storage industry at the Storage Networking World conference in Orlando, reports InformationWeek.

He suggests data deduplication, virtualisation and the reduction of physical server footprints through blade technology as ways in which power savings may be made - with such efforts key to the future progress of the industry.

The publication reports his comments: "Though the push for 'green' is unlikely to drive incremental spend given constrained IT budgets, we believe power and cost savings metrics will be an increasingly important differentiator for vendors."

Storage Networking World took place at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando from April 7th to 10th and was sponsored by a number of data storage firms including Emulex, Isilon Systems and Spectra Logic..
