'Greenest data centre' announced by HDS
24 Apr 2008
Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) has announced the creation of what it claims is the most environmentally friendly enterprise-class data centre in the industry.
The company reveals that its new facility, located in Yokohama, Japan, is built on the firm's own storage infrastructure to combine efficient energy usage with reduced carbon emissions one-fifth below those produced by its existing counterparts.
HDS asserts that the data centre leads the industry on both counts - energy efficiency and eco-friendliness - and hopes to achieve a power usage effectiveness rating of 1.6 from environmental action group The Green Grid.
Vice-president and chief technical officer Hu Yoshida comments: "We have found that the cost of energy and power has quickly emerged as a growing concern, driving companies to take a deeper look at the efficiency of their data centres."
The launch follows the earlier revelation that HDS had been named as the leading provider of block-level virtualisation solutions in an industry survey from analyst TheInfoPro.
