Recovered bandwidth 'may be reallocated'

29 Apr 2008

The bandwidth saved by making a data network more efficient may be used for alternative purposes, Riverbed has noted.

Steve Dixon, regional director for Australia and New Zealand at Riverbed, asserts that implementing the firm's wide-area data services (WDS) solutions can allow a network to carry multimedia content more effectively.

The bandwidth recovered by reducing the demand placed on the network by business data may be used for communications and voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services, he adds.

Mr Dixon says: "When organisations win back more bandwidth with WDS technology, they can reallocate some of it to real-time applications such as video conferencing, voice conferencing and VoIP."

His comments come as the Australian Trade Commission has implemented Riverbed Steelhead appliance across 119 of its regional offices in more than 60 different countries worldwide.

Visitors to the Interop Las Vegas 2008 conference are currently being given the option of witnessing first-hand demonstrations of Riverbed's WDS solutions.
