ExaGrid 'cuts backup times by half'

29 Apr 2008

One of ExaGrid's clients has succeeded in reducing its backup window by half after implementing the firm's byte-level deduplication systems, it has been revealed.

Educational facility Rio Hondo College in Los Angeles had previously been relying on a two-stage process through which data was backed up to disk and subsequently archived on tape.

However, the storage demands put in place by the need to maintain records on more than 20,000 students each semester caused staff to struggle as disk capacity was only sufficient to store two days of data before offloading to tape, ExaGrid explains.

Bill Andrews, president and chief executive officer of ExaGrid, says: "Many organisations turn to a disk-staging approach and then quickly realise that it falls short of their goals - they need disk-based backup with data deduplication."

Following the installation, the nightly backup process for the college took four hours, rather than the previous eight, while weekly archiving was cut to 12 hours from 24.

Another Los Angeles-based ExaGrid client, MemorialCare Medical Center, recently realised a reduction from 24 hours to six for its nightly backups after adopting the firm's solutions.
