Fix it before it's broke, advises Eaton
02 May 2008
The adage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" can be a dangerous one for data centre managers to adopt, according to Eaton.
By neglecting to prepare in advance for system failure, such IT professionals could be leaving themselves open to facing "devastating consequences", the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provider asserts.
However, carrying out regular maintenance of UPS units can make firms four times less likely to experience a loss of power, the company adds, even if up to six months is left between assessments of equipment health.
"Because a company relies on a UPS to deliver continuous power without any disruption to its business, proper service is a critical component to ensuring optimal performance," Eaton explains.
This could mean returning the device to the manufacturer for repair work to be carried out, or exchanging it for another refurbished unit should it be detected as being in poor condition.
Eaton recently noted that data centres where floor space is at a premium could find a three-phase UPS an ideal way of reducing the physical footprint of installed devices.
