Force10 espouses 'holistic approach' to eco-efficiency
06 May 2008
By adopting a holistic approach, issues relating to power and cooling in a data centre may be unified with overall goals for a particular business, it has been proposed.
Stephen Garrison, vice-president of marketing for Force10 Networks, recommends viewing such obstacles in a wider context rather than limiting environmentally driven efforts to specific aspects of green IT.
He advises using an "eco-efficiency lens" to overhaul data centres "by integrating environmental, social responsibility and economic impact analysis into the planning and design processes".
In such a way, he notes that green IT can be seen not as an obstacle but as a means of reducing the amount of power used in a data centre, which he adds is beginning to have an effect for some firms on both client satisfaction and the bottom line.
Force10 Networks recently announced that it had been granted its 20th patent for a system which aims to deliver consistently high network performance during periods of erratic traffic conditions.
