Virtual offices make sense, says Gartner
08 May 2008
Analyst Gartner has suggested that virtual offices "make good business sense" and urges business leaders not to resist adopting a flexible working strategy.
The organisation recommends carrying out a pilot scheme in firms where a conventional working procedure has been in place for a considerable length of time.
By doing so, companies can allay any fears that control will be lost and should see substantial gains in employee productivity, according to Gartner.
Andrew Walker, research director at Gartner's CIO research group, says: "Most enterprises don't have a formal plan for virtual office environments and usually support the concept on an ad hoc basis, mostly at manager discretion.
"Such informal arrangements don't realise the advantages of recruitment branding."
Gartner adds that employees given the option of working from home typically also have a space in the office at which they can work for a number of days each week.
Writing in a blog post for virtualisation solutions provider Virtual Iron, Mike Grandinetti recently noted widespread interest in cloud computing - the process by which remote offices are put in place.
He added that small to medium-sized enterprises are among the early adopters of such technology and more willing to incorporate virtualised elements into their network infrastructure.
