Separate controllers 'the next step' for storage
12 May 2008
The next stage for storage networking is to separate the controller from the media itself, according to Hu Yoshida.
Hitachi Data Systems' chief technical officer explains that storage has developed from the days when appliances were integrated, meaning one part of the process could not be upgraded independently.
But increasing uptake of storage virtualisation and dynamic provisioning is leading to a scenario where IT managers can buy "what you need when you need it" and cause minimum disruption to existing applications on the network, he contends.
While separating servers from storage has already occurred, Mr Yoshida forecasts that separate storage controllers are to play an increasingly important part in future infrastructure.
"By separating the storage controller from the media, you now have the choice of mixing and matching controller functions and storage media," he asserts.
Mr Yoshida recently advised that dynamic provisioning can allow pooled storage to be served as and when it is needed to individual users across the network, rather than allocating disk space to each person from the outset.
